Game #2 Washington 42 - Idaho 23
09/05/09
We FINALLY did it baby! We got the win that we had all been waiting for. At times we made it look really easy and at other times we made it look so much harder than it had to be. It didn't matter though, Rossy and I got our game faces on and headed to the game in some super nice weather. Here is Rossy taking a walk through the park on the way to the game.
Even though the team hasn't been the best in years past......well.....the team has been in the dumps, let's not lie here. But still, there is just something about getting to Husky Stadium and seeing The Cut as you cross the bridge. Husky Stadium is something else. Where else can you park your boat and walk right into the stadium? All of the beauty and it's the 5th oldest stadium in the country and the oldest in the Pac-10. Here is the picture of The Cut as we walked in.
Now, to the game. It was band day which of course is not one of my more favorite days. I have to say that it looked pretty cool having all of those bands on the field, but to me....it's all the same. It's pretty funny to watch Nick Holt introduce the band though, not to many guys get that fired up for a band.
Band day or not we were ready to see a victory. Nothing spells victory better than driving 90 something yards on your opening drive of the game and then having Jake Locker punching it in. Most of the time in the first half, the offense looked like a well oiled machine, converting on 3rd downs, not only in the first half, but through out the game. Second game in a row where we've showed that we are capable of making things happen on 3rd down. It's nice to see that considering how bad we were last year on 3rd downs.
Idaho didn't have the fan base there that LSU did, that's for sure. For all the times that we looked great on offense, there was something on defense that made you want to be sick. I said it last week and I'll say it again, the defensive backfield might be one of the worst in the nation. Very young, yes this is true, but are we to believe that these were the best we could recruit at the position. Another reason why no one is sad to see good old Tyrone leave.
We're improving but, to me, it didn't seem like we went forward from the LSU game. Idaho out gained us in yards and we did everything in our power to make Idado's quaterback look like Sam Bradford. Our ability to cover their receivers was not good. They were able to get free and in space a lot. I have to imagine that we are going to face better quaterbacks than Idaho's.
I still think everything is in the right place and we are on the right track. Do I think that's going to equal a lot of win this year? No way man. The defense will end up being one of the worst in the Pac-10 if not the country. If it wasn't for a Washington State team that continues to be the joke of the Pac-10 (I would trade a BYU, UTAH or TCU for Washington State any day of the week in the Pac-10), the Dawgs would no doubt be on bottom. I know the Huskies went 0-12 last year and WSU won 2 games but come on.....One was again Division 2 Portland State and the other was a LUCKY win against the Dawgs. For my money, the Cougs are by far the worst team two years in a row and have probably one of the worst coaches in the nation. USC next week baby, we are going to need a lot of things to go right! GO DAWGS!!!
